I chose to specialise in 3DD with the intention of going down the Interior Design and Architecture pathway. I will will be specialising in Interior Design at UAL Chelsea in September.
Throughout my foundation year I found myself drawn to the same design aesthetic, for both the interior and exterior. I tried to incorporate natural elements within the interior, and I focused mainly on period buildings when it came to the exterior.
For my FMP I decided to focus on Coffee, and how it could be incorporated into an interior space to enhance peoples moods. This idea was firstly inspired by an eco lodging farm in Costa Rica , which I had been researching, I then found myself looking at an organic coffee farm which was producing some of the most highly demanded coffee beans in Costa Rica.
From here I went on to research the history of coffee, where its grown now, and the different connotations that coffee carries.
From a survey that I had created as part of my primary research, I found out that 63% of the people I asked said that the smell of coffee effected their mood, so I focused my final outcome and development on ways in which the smell of fresh coffee could be ejected into a space.
My final design was a Hotel, inspired by Ethiopia. Coffee was discovered in Ethiopia and is still the top location for Coffee farming.
My Ethiopian inspired Hotel, features a room divider made out of clay, which I hand painted a mural onto, of my interpretation of the history of coffee. My clay room divider includes water fountain cups, which I intend to have coffee flowing down, which will therefore project the smell into the space. To accompany this I also designed a wallpaper with the coffee flower on it, which was used as a feature wall behind the reception desk. Finally to make the design of the Hotel lobby more unique, and more to the taste of Period Architecture, I designed an Art Nouveau inspired glass roof, which also allowed natural lighting to be the main source of lighting throughout the day.
