Theme

For my project, I looked at how feminism has been approached in art. I asked my peers about their thoughts on the topic and used this and the influence of artists such as Rebecca Warren and Franz West to create a series of sculptures. They resemble human bodies and vary in size, shape and are made of different materials (including clay, modroc and paper pulp). Their purpose is to reject any expectations society has for what a body should look like and any sexualisation/objectification. I also looked into how race can affect feminism. I was inspired by the film The Watermelon Woman by Cheryl Dunye to carry out a handful of interviews with women discussing their experiences with feminism and how their race has had an impact on this. I then merged these two parts of my project by projecting one of the interviews (including one of my friends and myself discussing feminism, the experiences of women of colour and what I had learnt from the other interviews with women from an older generation).
