Mobile games make gaming accessible for all demographics of people and with my passion for 3D art and character/creature design I’ve decided to produce a set of brawlers for an imaginary mobile game. It includes six characters which are: Fawn, Praying Mantis, Ork, Skeleton King, Witch and Jester. Each of them represents a class you can encounter in most video games: druid, berserker, cleric, magician, bard and a boss for them to face. With my designs I was trying to build on pre-existing stereotypes like an Ork warrior and push them further with facial expressions and body language. In the case of Fawn, for example, she was given a cheerful set of facial expressions alongside with wiggly tail and ears to highlight her playful personality and agility. The broadest setting that could fit all of my characters is Medieval Fantasy where a human-sized mantis can co-exist with a Fawn. My main inspiration were games like Brawl Stars, Clash of Clans and Age of Apes.
All of the development stages except for Unity programming and animations I handled myself. These steps include 2D designs, 3D modelling, texturing, rigging, effects and UI. The hardest and most tedious part was certainly rigging – giving the brawlers a skeleton to move according to- I had to go back and forth editing tiny dependencies to maintain the least amount of distortion and most believability. In the end, the most enjoyable and rewarding moment was seeing all of my models on a mobile screen moving, making faces and reacting to button presses after dedicating nearly a year to this project.
