Rituals is an expression of my personal experience and journey with feelings of diaspora growing up in the UK. The series aims to portray a visual manifestation of the dissonance as a result of assimilating into Western society while trying to maintain a connection to our ethnic cultures.
The project approaches this through the combination of objects and colours with cultural value in Chinese society and displaying them in an uncanny fashion contrary to tradition. The ritualisation of East and Southeast Asian aesthetics is something that is historically and currently prominent in the Western media, resulting in an orientalised and consumable version of Asian culture as a commodity.
