The approach to this documentary was to keep it light-hearted. As the director, the aim was to make the audience feel engrossed with the subject. I wanted the cinematography of this film to be minimal; as a minimalist architect, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe says “less is more”. I aspire to create and narrate stories that may be neglected by the majority; providing valuable information for others who are not familiar with the subject.
The inspiration behind this project is quite personal. I met Kevin a little over 4 years ago and through cutting my hair every few weeks, we developed a relationship that was more than just barber and client. Since the day I entered his barbershop for the first time, not only was he welcoming, he was full of positive energy which I felt all around the shop. I aim to achieve a visually pleasing film in the eye of others and at the same time provide an insight into someone’s life and values that I personally resonate with.
Despite Asian societal stigmatism against stretched ear lobes and tattoos, Kevin is an understanding, selfless and humble individual; the few things I will always remember him for. With that being said, I wanted to showcase what I’ve learned from him to others in the hope of making the world a better place.
