For my Final Major Project specialising in textiles, I based my ideas around my hometown and the place I grew up Whitstable, Kent where I focused on showing the contrasting difference between the bright, pastel Whitstable town we see today compared to its industrial, working docks filled with centuries of history not many people know nowadays. I decided to focus on Whitstable traditional fishing town with its quirky, colourful architectures, the working industrial docks of Whitstable harbour and how the Whitstable festivals celebrate the town in a bright, creative atmosphere. Throughout this project, I aimed to both convey Whitstable’s individuality as a seaside town and the importance of Whitstable’s history through the annual festivals; celebrating the historical achievements in a modernised way. I took a lot of inspiration from my childhood memories of growing up in a town like Whitstable and to show a town with its own story behind it. My way of working and style of art is usually digital illustrations which I tried to incorporate in my experimentations that became a few of my final outcomes and even my fashion garments. For this project, I created two final tapestry prints inspired by Whitstable town and Whitstable Harbour, specifically Dazzle camouflage on the ships during WW1. From these prints, I also made a fisherman’s jacket from the Whitstable town print and a pair of lounge trousers from the dazzle camouflage print. For my final outcomes I incorporate each of the experimental processes I did throughout the project into my garments and tapestries; like dying manipulated fabric to create interesting marks and my digital illustrations turned into screen prints. Another aspect I wanted to covey in my is the importance of colour within my work as I wanted to show a bright and bold colour palette through my project and final outcomes.
