Creating an item of furniture which maximises limited space when working from home.

I started this project by looking at the struggles I have faced when working from home – which was mainly the lack of useable workspace.

I started exploring products that already existed to see if I could find a gap in the market for something new as well as conducting research with fellow students using surveys.

I started the design process by changing the workspace itself and experimented with various ideas and additions until I came up with the idea of something to sit on top of a desk or other workspace.  This meant the laptop was at a better height for online calls and improved posture as well as leaving more room for paperwork underneath.  So the item has multiple benefits.

I looked at different materials that would be beneficial to the environment eg. using recycled materials but I decided to use softwood at it was cost effective and sustainable as well as being in response to the feedback I had received – saying wood was more adaptable.

I am happy with the concept of my design and product, as it fulfils it’s design purpose as well as being a simple design to understand and make.
