To Walk Quietly by Tiptoe has multiple outcomes – the first is a studio-based constructed photography that uses subtle imagery to reflect on the democracy movement in Hong Kong. The tableau photographic installation work has an accompanying film that extends this symbolic portraiture within a location experimental film and studio-based photo series constructs express themes of cultural identity that intersects with the politics of the democracy movement in Hong Kong.
The photographic tableau recreates compositions from renaissance paintings, the photographs explore themes such as the political, geopolitical, colonisation, cultural & ethnic identity, focusing on the CCP. The film work is Inspired by Wong Kar Wai film discography, and his signature voice over scenes, the story will follow an exiled activist reminiscing about home (Hong Kong), in an indoor setting eating Chinese food. Both works explore poetic approaches and use symbolism to make a political commentary. The subject of the work is Lily Xian, a UCA student who is from Hong Kong.
My work investigates current socio-political narratives from an allegorical point of view, overlapping my love for cultural identity and fashion respectively. Thus a visual art direction that speaks on current issues especially regarding the communist party by bridging these interests. I am trying to blend subtle subversive symbolism; a duality of perception depending on the audience looking at the work, some may take it as criticism and some may appreciate the fashion and cultural aspect.
Through a variety of media- film and photography, I was able to convey outcomes that created a personal yet commercial art-driven project. Using these mediums to essentially tell stories from my perspective of the ongoing tensions of Hong Kong, South East Asia with China. In a way, the dilution of directness is an approach of self-censorship, especially the growing power of the communist party.
In 3 years, I have honed my skills as a photographer, camera operator, cinematographer, director and producer. Working on various projects such as a few dance films and working towards becoming an editorial/commercial photographer and filmmaker.
