I decided to take a quite different approach to this project. It was a personal journey, and the art became a visual language for that journey, a way to express the changes that took place on the inside. I was naturally motivated by the chance for personal growth, to set right things that were out of order by the help of God. It was an opportunity deepen the understanding I had of myself and the relationship I have with God.
Rediscovering womanhood was all about uncovering lies and wrong belief systems related to femininity and womanhood, to later learn and replace them with the truth of God’s pure purpose and way of seeing it. I was in many ways inspired by the process that was already taking place inside of me. It was a way to speak life into the lives of others like myself, who struggled with the same issue. I wanted to share my journey with the people around me and show them the process that took place and the freedom that you can find in Jesus.
I found that the best way to speak of the journey that had taken place was to work through the changes on one and the same canvas, having that one piece contain the whole story. I made an x-ray image of my painting to emphasize the difference between the bound and the free. I had a set of ever-changing, storytelling photographs accompany the two paintings, to enable people take a step into the process I myself had been going through.
