This is ‘The Social Butterfly’; a mixed media presentation of my experiences with growing up online. Demonstrating the struggles metaphorically, this installation and concertina illustrates the mental decline of a child growing through a world that’s encompassed by social media. Representing this transformation through the process of metamorphosis, ‘The Social Butterfly’ reveals how social media decomposes their authenticity, becoming monstrous to reflect their mindset. As for the structure, the enclosure holds the cocoons and brings this metaphor into a three-dimensional reality. The concertina displays the explanation and visuals of this process, documenting each stage of the child’s development. Lastly, the animation expands upon this explanation, setting the indoctrinating atmosphere for the teenage ‘creatures’ to thrive and grow.
