Heather Cochran

BA (Hons) Fashion Atelier

Theme

I would like to introduce myself as Heather Cochran, a graduate of the Fashion Atelier course at UCA Rochester. I am detail-orientated and meticulous with my work, and always strive to push myself to get the best outcome. I aspire to work within the bespoke bridal-wear industry, using the skills I have learnt to create one-off pieces that will stand the test of time. I’m motivated to progress my skills and learn new things every day.

My graduate collection is an exploration of how Elton John’s onstage persona has been a facade for his struggles, especially through the 1970s and 80s. I considered the antagonism, aggression and violent battle with his shyness and addictions. It focuses on internal dialogue and struggles which influenced Elton’s addiction-filled phase during this time. Most people have an interpretation of Elton John and the aim was to distort that.  Designing tailored pieces that use traditional atelier methods to reflect Elton John’s wardrobe aided in creating my final collection. Using 3D stand work influenced a further expansion of work which heavily inspired the final lineup. The chiffon used throughout the collection is sheer and is a metaphor for the different layers of character and how they can be distorted yet fluid.  The collection has a serious atmosphere with flashes of flamboyance. The designs are experimental yet are classic and wearable; this is achieved by using strong shapes and silhouettes and adding extravagance.

The idea behind the illustrated line-up was to show a diverse range of people, representation of minorities needs more focus within the fashion industry.  I hated the idea of drawing one person, one size, one colour etc for the illustrations because there are so many beautiful bodies out there so I took it upon myself to showcase all kinds of people. I would have loved to create a whole army of diverse croquis.
