Jemma Young is a Guildford based photographer working with constructed portraiture, stylised image compositions, and digital manipulation. Young creates a desired mood and atmosphere through colour dominancy, image composition, and framing. In some instances, this is enhanced by subject stance, pose and gaze, whilst in others, the prominence of text or human absence. Young’s work aims to portray authentic and honest imagery that a wider audience can relate to.
Her current work is concerned with documenting self – not only through self-portraiture but others as well. By building a connection with the lens on a personal level, Young is able to document and compartmentalise her thoughts and feelings in correlation to a point in time or specific theme. Most recently, Young explored both the physical and mental struggle lockdown imposed on her life, using constructed self-portraits and tableaux to reflect on this time of uncertainty and the unknown.
