In Jiahui Ye’s final project, A City I Rarely Heard Of, she returned to her home country from England and used the photographic lens to re-examine Nanning, the city where she lived for more than 20 years.
Nanning, is one of the provincial capitals with the least sense of existence in China. It is the capital of Guangxi but has a blurred face (low popularity and no characteristics). For many years, the government has spared no effort to carry out the city vanity project, transforming the old city to build countless new buildings. They have a prosperous image of the city, claiming that it is a “green city”.
The purpose of shooting this project for Jiahui is not to let more people know Nanning. What she wants to explore is this contradiction. This is the contradiction faced by many second and third-tier cities in China. She is interested in the blurry face of the city itself.
