When I was five years old, I was invited to dub for a little boy. From then on, I have been thinking about how the voice behind the scenes and the people in front of the scene match together without making the audience suspicious.
In my perspective, I consider sound as an essential part of a film that can expand the audience’s imagination. How to make the sound lifelike and perfectly integrate with the picture without being discovered by the audience is the most important thing for a sound designer to consider.
I think sound design is expanding the boundaries of film art and technology in an unprecedented way, giving film narrative more possibilities. Sound designers need to communicate with the director, dig out the sound design concept that best fits the film, and investigate the subtext behind the sound demand.
In the video I uploaded, I present three styles of my work, in order: Breakfast, Jian Dan Qin Xin and Silent. The sound parts of these are made by myself, except the music in Silent.
For me, the principle of choosing sound effects is authenticity, closeness and loyalty to the film. I will draw on the resources around me to fill the sound effects library. One is the sound of a thick and hard tie sliding into the coffee. I thought for a long time before I tried to fold the dry towel, dip it in a water cup by rubbing my fingers on the edge of the cardboard together to get the right sound. Another one is, the bone friction produced a sound when I scratched my hair. That made the sound of ear picking more real.
Second, I am used to recording the ambience in various scenes and adjust the parameters of the reverb to let them close to reality. When mixing, I also pay attention to the spatial position of the characters, so that the sound effect can avoid the frequency of musical instruments, to form a harmonious relationship between the two frequencies. They are particularly important in Jian Dan Qin Xin- from one of the best Chinese Martial Arts Games, JX3. Because there are insects, different winds, weapons, human voice and so on in this movie. They need different reverb settings to give a reasonable hearing effect.
Last, It’s very interesting to select suitable sounds from many materials and make use of them. For example, in Silent, the sound effect of touching hair and wearing a hat is the same. A slight adjustment can achieve different effects. It was made by Dolby. In Silent, I saw Dolby pay homage to countless films. This is a thank you and a dream. Who doesn’t want to witness the development of the film travel through the time river? In this film, I also use EQ, reverb, delay and other effectors to distinguish between indoor and outdoor, on-screen and off-screen (because there is a screen in the movie).
