My work is inspired by my Chinese heritage/background and I try to mix traditional Chinese dress with modern and sometimes futuristic silhouettes and ideas. I specialise in print design and illustration which I only really began to explore this year. For my final year work, I explored two projects, “Shanghai Ladies” and “Heavenly Bodies”.

“Shanghai Ladies”, my final major project, is inspired by the Shanghai Lady posters from 1930s China. From there, I researched other poster designs such as modern Chinese graphic posters for foods and the “Take-away Merch” trend. Using these elements, I created my own repeat-print and placement print, inspired by the typography, fonts and layouts. I also used elements of the Cheongsam (Chinese dress) like mandarin collars and mixed them with playful cut-outs and ties. The colour palette is inspired by the Hong Kong movie “In The Mood For Love”; dark moody colours paired with the cheerful and summery “Golden Peach” trend.

“Heavenly Bodies” is inspired by the Chinese Goddess of the Moon, Chang’E. A mix of traditional Hanfu (Chinese Dress) and futuristic space suit elements. The print design is inspired by moon cakes and the trippy “Club Rats” trend. Themes of fluidity and restriction run throughout the project, combined with transformation as the final garment can be worn in two ways at the sleeves: loose or gathered with the pull-strings.

More of my work can be seen on my Instagram which I update regularly!
