Theme

Throughout my project I was exploring memory, which evolved to investigate the duality of it regarding the concept and nature of memory; the thoughts, feelings and ideas surrounding it, as well as the physicality of memory within the painting through layers, traces, marks etc. Within this oil painting, I wanted a balance of detailed areas versus more loose, empty areas. Within these more detailed areas: marks and shapes suggestive of figures and buildings that we picture in our minds when we think about memories. These ambiguous forms are inspired and based on my own experiences and memories, but not depicted too accurately or specifically, to allow the viewer to have the opportunity to relate their own experiences and memories. Some of the artists that inspired my work are Nigel Cooke, Tom Climent, Joshua Hagler and May Everett.
