Margate: A Cultural Study is a project that is very close to my heart as it’s about where I live and the people that live there. The project is in two sections: a video documentary and a photo book. The documentary briefly covers Margate’s history but focuses on its present and the ramifications of its sudden rise in popularity on Margate’s residents. The photo book is an accompaniment to the documentary and uses quotes from the film and photos from around Margate focusing on its duality; shots of graffiti and empty buildings, contrasting with beautiful galleries and book shops.
I chose to do my final project on my home town and whats it’s like to live there as it was a topic I didn’t really fully understand myself, despite living in margate for 6 years. Filming the documentary allowed me to see Margate from different perspectives and allowed me to research its history which is something I probably would not have done if I hadn’t completed this project.
Please enjoy the project as much as I enjoyed making it.
