Hi, I’m Naomi and I do stop-motion animation with a focus on puppetry.
I enjoy making films about people and the relationships we have with one another and ourselves. I find that taking the small moments we all share and expanding them into film concepts has been a corner stone of my creative process!
An example of this is for my graduation film Is It Dead? where I wanted to explore the concept of trying (and failing) to explain the unexplainable. We all have aspects of our lives that can only be experienced and when we try to communicate these things with others, or even our past selves, there is only so much empathy we can have. This can be anything from losing faith to fitness. However in this film, I wanted to use the universally unexplainable concept of Death as a placeholder for all these things.
The film follows two characters – Alex, who understands what death is and Freddie who does not – and Alex’s attempts to get Freddie to understand. In the process we see Freddie’s misunderstandings as empty white moments, which were a great opportunity for me to play with animation!
Despite the film discussing the often difficult topic of death, I wanted Is It Dead?, as with all my films, to have a sense of cheerfulness and to not take itself too seriously – something that I think the medium of stop-motion does so well.
For the future I would like to continue to make films celebrating our daily lives and the complexities we all face, and I would like to explore the production side of film making.
My other films include; a colourful look into lockdown life in Some Equipment Needed; the trouble with single beds and a relationship in Budget Double; and one woman’s exploration into some wild hair in Baldy.
