Neave March

Hi there! My name’s Neave, welcome to my showcase page. I use art as a method to either vent my frustrations about the world in a satirical fashion or create aesthetically pleasing pieces that I conjure up inside my head and put onto paper. But sometimes they’re a mixture of the two! I enjoy using watercolours, ceramics, and digital platforms, such as Procreate, to make my work. During my time at UCA, I have bettered my skills in many new areas, particularly self-directed practices. I was lucky enough to experience my first commissioned piece at UCA, under the guidance of my tutors, which helped me understand how to navigate a creative brief. My Final Major Project was based on British culture, which piqued my interest during the height of the pandemic, with the spirit of togetherness being encouraged during these unprecedented times fascinating me most. It led me to research aspects of life that unite us and separate us. But it soon became apparent that I was actually exploring human nature in Britain. As someone who studied Sociology at A-Level, I’m drawn to the dynamics of society, so looking into what it means to be a British citizen sustained my curiosity throughout the project. I hope you enjoy looking through some of my favourite pieces of work that I produced in my time at UCA. 🙂

Neave March | Pre-degree & Foundation Studies 5
My book deconstruction illustrating the "New Normal" of 2020/21. I wanted to compile recognisable imagery from the pandemic together to create the hectic atmosphere visually that we are living through physically.

Experimenting with realism, I sculpted two hands out of clay, which I wanted to be symbolic of the support Steris gives to the NHS- especially during the pandemic.

This is the piece of work I was commissioned to make by Steris, a company which specialises in the sterilisation of medical equipment. I felt the image encapsulated the cleaning process of the instruments- figuratively speaking.

For this piece, I wanted to use recognisable imagery, such as a Penguin book cover, and twist it to carry a more political message.

Exploring magazine design, I created a topical layout based on vaccine speculation and humour- toying with the idea of getting superpowers as a result of the new jab.

This is the last page in my book “The Mask is the New Plastic Bottle”, where I illustrated the life cycle of a surgical face mask, and it’s inevitable demise into polluting the ocean.
