I chose to base my final major project on the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker. I designed costumes for a theoretical stage adaptation of the book, but instead of focusing on historical accuracy, I based the costumes on fashion movements that have been inspired by the Victorian era. .I made a full costume for the character Professor Van Helsing, inspired by steampunk fashion. I chose steampunk for him as it’s a movement that mixes the aesthetics and technology of the industrial revolution with the Victorian era’s romantic view of science in literature; Van Helsing being a very intelligent and resourceful character, on top of a professor, seemed to fit the archetype of this movement perfectly.
