Theme

The Wagon by Ruby Adambarage De Alwis is a piece based on the script ‘The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus’ written by Terry Gilliam and Charles McKeown in 2007. With the construction of the exterior and the interior of the wagon, I aim to challenge, question, and seduce the audience of the postmodern society through the set and the props. My research was based on how our culture is based on identities constructed by capitalist consumerism.

In the script, the wagon is used by Doctor Parnassus and his crew as their travelling home and theatre, where he is giving the audience the option to choose between unnecessary materialism or spiritualism.

For this reason, I developed an exterior and an interior that aim to give contradictive thoughts to the audience. I want people to comprehend the two different types of lives between the consumerist society and a person (Doctor Parnassus) who wants to keep life’s values without unnecessary items.

The exterior represents the consumer society, while the interior is about looking at the spiritual side of the humane race and how Doctor Parnassus is doing as much as possible to keep the consumerism and this type of harmful thoughts out from the wagon especially from his den.
