Theme

Inspired by my own cultural and religious background, my handwoven textiles celebrate the identity of the maker. My design practice encapsulates everything I am passionate about: weaving, colours, geometry, and patterns.

I have been drawn to creating with my hands from a very young age, inspired by my grandmothers who were makers themselves. I enjoy experimenting with different mediums and designing patterns before translating them into woven cloth.

As an Indian-Muslim, I find that having a personal connection with my projects inspires me to create woven pieces that tell a story or raise awareness about a certain topic. My latest project, ‘Unity Without Compromise’ explores my identity as a Muslim in the western world focusing specifically on the Hijab Ban. The aim of my project was to explore text in textiles using Arabic Calligraphy in an abstract way to design contemporary prayer mats.
