Extended Diploma in Art & Design - Year 1 - Canterbury

Theme

I am Sebastian Elliott and I have finished my first year doing an extended diploma in Art and Design at UCA Canterbury. For my second year, I am hoping to specialise in Fine Art as that is the path I want to take after finishing this course in hope of becoming an artist. The reason I enjoy fine art is due to the fact you can use a broad range of media to represent a concept. So far, I have focused on the 2D side of fine art. In the future, I hope to start experimenting with the lens-based side of fine art.

In my final piece “Memory” I created 30 x 40-inch mixed media canvases using oil and acrylic paint, collaged image transfer using my own photography and lino printing. This piece is meant to represent the memories of the brutalist scenery of Ashford during my time at school there. Through my choice of colour, brush strokes and layering of media I aimed to represent the feelings of angst that are within my memories of that time of my life. I also wanted to show how memory can become merged into one as well as how it can become faded and distorted with time through how I have depicted the buildings moving into one in the middle of the canvas and layered my choices of medium.

Since starting this course I have been really inspired to paint, so I have created an Instagram page to show the work I have done outside of the course as well as some pieces I have done during the course.
