BA (Hons) Illustration & Animation - Canterbury

Theme

In my film ‘The Beloved Country”  I reflect on my grief, bereavement and demise. And of course, on the beloved country itself!

I have used a selection of photos and videos to work with, many of which I have rotoscoped to create hand-crafted moving images based on photography and filmed action. I enjoy bringing illustration to life and my film is a collation of these scenes or vignettes. By combining imagery with sound and music I hope to share my emotion and also convey the atmosphere of the place. In fact, I find it hard to separate imagery from sound and it is when they are both working together that I feel most satisfied with my creative output. I used Adobe Photoshop and Premier to make my film.

Having no formal art education I embarked on UCA’s FE ‘Access Course’ specially designed for mature students. This was an invaluable stepping stone, which enabled me to progress through to the Illustration and Animation Degree Course. The reasons I did all this are explained in my film.  As a person of considerable advanced age there was no other way I could ever  have entered into higher education or graduated with a degree! This opportunity has been mentally life-saving and given me new goals and aspirations. I am very thankful to have had this opportunity.

I will continue to work on and develop the skills I have learned at Uni even after I graduate and will do so until advanced old age, extreme poor health or death overtake me.
