Hi! I’m Sophie and during my time at UCA my main interest has been embroidery, specifically 3D hand embroidery. I love looking at intricate and detailed art- I believe hand embroidery is the epitome of this, which is why it’s my favourite medium to work with. Another reason I’m drawn to the art form is because it isn’t tied to just one industry, it can feature in fashion, costuming, soft furnishing design and textile art. Over the past few years, my embroidery has been inspired by numerous artists, designers and brands, such as Dolce & Gabbana, Nguyen Cong Tri, Alexander McQueen and most recently Jessica Grady.

I love working with a number of other textile mediums including weaving, knitting, macramé and felting. I enjoy trying to push myself further by combining these techniques, with the hope of creating something people haven’t seen before.

Overall, I would say most of my artwork is intricate and includes a number of materials and techniques. I make sure to try at least one new practical technique in every project I work on, so I can continue to extend my skill set. I would also say I opt for an extensive colour palette because I highly value colour in my work.

Find me on Instagram @sophiegrace.art to see drawings, paintings, sketchbook pages and more textile work!
