Willow Blackwell

Extended Diploma in Art & Design - Year 1 - Canterbury

Theme

My name is Willow Blackwell, I study at UCA in Canterbury. I have just finished the first year of my extended diploma. During this past year despite covid19 restrictions, I have learned so much and I am proud of my progression as an artist. During the course, I have most enjoyed lens-based media as it allows me to express myself creatively and I am always pushing myself to get better. The possibilities are endless.

In my second year, I hope to learn more about lens-based media and create more short films and animations.

If you want to watch any more of my short films and animations go to my Vimeo account

These are some of the weaves I made during the fashion and textiles week. I used a range of different materials including plastic bags, wool, and felt.

Artist transcription I was heavily inspired by Goya’s piece, ‘Disaster Of War’ 1810, and Jake and Dino Chapman’s transcription of ‘Disaster Of War’ piece in 1993. I wanted to make my own transcription by adding a modern twist to it, I also change the dismantled bodies to female bodies as a metaphor to show how women and still oppressed and are at a war to get equal rights.

Kims identity During the identity week, I created an image transfer, which explored my step mum, Kims, identity, and her history.

Deconstruction and reconstruction During the fashion and textiles week, I designed and created this garment. I wanted to reuse and recycle unwanted clothing, materials and fabrics. During that week we learnt how to weave fabrics and materials, I wanted to include this in my garment. I made this halter neck, weaved top by deconstructing two pairs of trousers and then reconstructing them into a top.
